Class 25 Action

Aberystwyth Saturday 30th July 1983

(L) 25202 and 25119 head the 07:35hrs Euston - Aberystwyth into Newtown station.

(C & R) 25119 and 25202 run round the ECS at Aberystwyth and prepare to depart with the 14.00 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury service.

The 10.10 Euston - Aberystwyth headed by 25181 and 25229 arrives at Machynlleth, passing the 14.00 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury.

25249 stands in the stabling point, shortly to burst into life to rescue 14.00 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury.

25229 heads the dead 25181 on the 17:15 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury as it climbs Talerddig.  From the roof steam can be seen rising from the overheating engine coolant system.

25229 and 25181 stand quietly with the 17:15hrs Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury at a crossing outside Caersws station.  An attempt is made to refill the radiator tanks with a hosepipe borrowed from a local resident.

25229 and 25181 make it through to Caersws station where further delays ensue whilst attempts are made to refill the radiator of the leading loco before the train sets off again..

25229 and 25181 make it no further than Newtown station with the 17:15 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury before they fail and 47226 is summoned to their rescue.  Nick Lawford looks for alternative moves to escape from Class 47 haulage but, alas, there aren't any!
